McDowell Elementary Debuts Dual Immersion Program

The first dual immersion program in the Petaluma City School District, and the second of its kind in the city , opened to students Tuesday as the school’s teachers and administrators look forward to a new and diverse era of learning. McDowell Elementary School, which opened in 1958 at 421 S. McDowell Blvd. , is now offering curriculum in two simultaneous languages — English and Spanish — for students starting in kindergarten through second grade, alongside its traditional English-speaking K-6 classes.

With a little assistance, and some genuine inspiration, from the 4th grade class at Penngrove Elementary School, an unsightly roadside retaining wall near downtown Penngrove has received a first-class upgrade, and the results are nothing short of wild. That’s “wild” as in “wildlife,” the Sonoma County kind.

‘She’s not nervous so we’re not nervous’: Petaluma students, staff head back to school

Jaime Buschman was greeted Tuesday by a sea of smiling faces and energetic “Good mornings” from third grade students while they molded clay sculptures at their desks. It was the first day back from summer break at the Petaluma City School District, and the first time Buschman would welcome students as Valley Vista Elementary’s newly hired principal. “I am so excited to be a part of this community,” Buschman said Tuesday morning. “Valley Vista is always spoken amongst us as a hidden gem; that it is just such a unique school in that the sense of community from (transitional kindergarten) to sixth grade is so strong.”
