• International Baccalaureate Program at Valley Vista

From IB's Head of Authorization, February 15, 2018:

Valley Vista Elementary is a candidate school for the International Baccalaureate (IB) Primary Years Program (PYP) and pursuing authorization as an IB World School.  IB World Schools share a common philosophy- a commitment to improve the teaching and learning of a diverse and inclusive community of students by delivering challenging, high-quality programmes of international education that share a powerful vision.

    How did we get here?

Mrs. Haugen & the teaching staff began investigating this programmatic shift in January 2017.  Teachers took a field trip to an IB school in Napa and a team attended an IB conference over summer.  Upon our return in August, we decided to take the plunge!  COVID put a pause in our work toward Authorization.  But the 2021-2022 school year will get us back on track!  We are about halfway through unit development and are excited to jump back in to inquiry and action with students in person!

    What's happening now?

The IB Learner Profile is an intergral part of classroom, playground and campus life.  Mrs. O is teaching Spanish to all students once or twice weekly. Teachers have all attended two or three IB Trainings.  Every classroom will experience at least three Units of Inquiry the 2021-2022 school year.  The goal is 6 Units of Inquiry to span the year (four unit for TK and K).  We plan to move forward with Authroization in spring 2022.

What does this mean for students?

Students and staff use the 10 Learner Profile attributes consistently around campus and even at home.   Teachers are consistently turning their curriculum to a global view, taking steps toward the globally-minded, action oriented goals of IB.  Inquiry is the major underpinning of IB so we are embracing what inquiry really means--guided, structured, open.  Each type gives more or less guidance to students depending on the topic and age of students.  All three fit in every classroom.  All students will experience at least three Units of Inquiry during the 2021-2022 school year.  Here we go!

    The IB Mission Statement:

The International Baccalaureate® aims to develop inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people who help to create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect.
