Sixth Grade Academy Closing

April 27, 2020

Dear Petaluma City Schools Community,

For several years, Sixth Grade Academy (SGA) successfully transitioned many students from elementary school to junior high. SGA students came from around the community to attend school on the Petaluma Junior High campus, while simultaneously maintaining their place in a tight-knit, sixth-grade class. Through its history, Sixth Grade Academy has transformed the lives of students and their families in a positive way.

Over the last couple of years, changing circumstances have made Sixth Grade Academy difficult to maintain. Last year, Petaluma City Schools (PCS) considered whether it was possible to continue SGA and, ultimately, we were able to keep it going for another year. At the April 21, 2020 Board Meeting, the PCS Board of Education made the difficult decision to close Sixth Grade Academy at the end of the 2019-20 school year, due to the low number of applicants.

PCS is reviewing the 2020-21 applicant information for Sixth Grade Academy, so that we can offer the best placement for all students. In the coming days, PCS schools will reach out to each family to offer information about their programs.

Thank you,

Liz Chacón, Ed.D.
