A Message from Superintendent Gary Callahan
Dear Petaluma City Schools Community,
I wanted to take this opportunity to thank each of you for your partnership in answering the call to overcome the unprecedented challenges of this past year. It has not been easy, but I believe that we have done our very best to keep health, safety, and student learning at the forefront of our work. Most importantly, we have faced these challenges together and strived to make critical decisions that were in the best interests of students, staff, and their respective families. I feel that we’ve had a balanced approach in responding to the realities of a pandemic that has now tragically taken the lives of over half a million Americans.
Like many of you, this year has been one of reflection for myself and my family. It has been a humbling experience to try to do what is right for all parties, particularly at a time when there is so much division and dissent that surrounds us. I hope that all parties will have the courage in the coming months to begin healthy, respectful dialogue that will lead to an atmosphere in our community that is based on mutual understanding and kindness.
At the end of June, I will have completed thirty-two years in education. I have been deeply committed to this work and am blessed with a wonderful family that has been supportive and understanding of the personal sacrifices that I’ve made over the years. It is with mixed emotions that I have decided to take a step back from being Superintendent and refocus my energies on being a husband and dad to three amazing children. I will be retiring effective June 30, 2021. While I am excited to take this next step and see what the future will bring, I will dearly miss the PCS community.
Petaluma City Schools is a great place with great people. The PCS community is second-to-none and has worked hard to establish an environment built on trust and a shared desire to make a difference. I will be leaving the next Superintendent with an exceptional District that is poised to continue a legacy of excellence.
In the short term, we will all be working hard to get our students back to in-person learning. I cannot thank everyone enough for working with us through this incredibly difficult experience and am excited for what the coming years will bring for Petaluma City Schools.
Superintendent, Petaluma City Schools
