It is with great pleasure that we introduce our new board of education member, Dr. Sheldon Gen.
Dr. Gen is an award-winning educator, currently in his 16th year as professor of public policy at San Francisco State University. He primarily teaches coursework for students in both the Master of Public Administration and Doctor of Education (Ed.d) programs. Much of the coursework Dr. Gen teachers is directly relevant to the operations of a school district. In addition to being a nationally recognized educational researcher, Sheldon has found time to participate in governing boards such as the San Francisco State Academic Senate and Graduate Councils.
A parent of two school-age children, Dr. Gen stated in his application for the Board position that he hopes to bring all of his experiences to Petaluma City Schools to help deliver high-impact education to Petaluma’s families.
Dr. Gen and his wife, Laine, are raising two amazing children in Petaluma. Laine teaches adult ESL and citizenship for Petaluma Adult School. Formerly, Laine was a high school French teacher in the San Francisco Unified School District and in Georgia.
Sheldon’s children are Linden, a 7th grader at Kenilworth, who enjoys robotics won the south county spelling bee last year, and Dahlia, a 5th grader at Loma Vista Immersion Academy. Dahlia loves cooking and astronomy, and recently won a telescope from the Sonoma County Astronomical Society.
